We still live in a very regressive society when it comes to showing compassion to the LGBT+ community. When on one hand institutions and workplaces are not ready to blur the inequality line, we as an individual are also extremely homophobic where a majority of the people don’t invest in understanding the struggle and horror the community faces on a daily basis.

‘Invisible’: that is how LGBT+ scientists describe their status at their institution, laboratory, classroom, or office. Discussing the complexity and hardship face by many scientists from sexual and gender minorities, here are some observations from a 2019 survey that backups this sense of invisibility;

• Nearly 30% of LGBT+ scientists and half of the transgender scientists said that they had considered leaving their workplace because of an unfriendly or hostile climate or because of discrimination.
• Nearly 20% of LGBT+ chemists and 32% of transgender and non-binary scientists across all disciplines had experienced exclusionary, offensive or harassing behavior at work in the previous year.
• About half of the respondents agree that there is an overall lack of awareness of LGBT+ issues in the workplace.
• Also, a 2016 study found that LGBT+ undergraduate students are 7% less likely to be retained in STEM fields than are their non-LGBT+ counterparts.

The 2019 survey was conducted on more than 1,000 UK-based physical scientists.

We as progressive millennials who have been educated in repetitive institutions find sexual orientation and sexual and gender identity the taboo topics of conversation in many Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) workplaces. LGBT+ scientists argue that cloaking an important part of their identity at work can have dangerous consequences for mental health and career advancement, both for individual scientists and for the disciplines that could drive them away.

While many institutions and funding agencies follow gender bias in data, they do not collect data on sexual orientation and gender identity. For example, the US National Science Foundation has been collecting data on medicine, healthcare, driving, and even urban planning based on one default in mind; a white male weighing 70 kgs. They are still considering whether they should include LGBT questions in their Survey of Earned Doctorates, years after announcing it intended to test the feasibility of doing so.

Hontas Farmer: Break with convention

Hontas Farmer (she) is a Black, transgender theoretical physicist and a lecturer at Elmhurst University in Illinois.

Scientists should be aware that colleagues can have vastly different backgrounds and experiences. I’m 40 now, and still in debt…… I’m also a part of the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), a volunteer-powered collaboration between NASA and the European Space Agency researching gravitational waves. I don’t get paid for this work. If I weren’t so driven, I might have quit physics and returned to being a sex worker. Or I might be dead: many trans women of color wind up dead before the age of 35.

I could not get the recommendation letter that I needed to apply for a Ph.D. program. The professor said that they did not think I could get a job. “You’re too eccentric to be you, and be a physicist — you have to be overwhelmingly great, and you’re not,” they told me.

That made me angry at the time, but now I think in some ways they were right. Not everyone gets to be a full-time tenure-track professor, especially in today’s job market. But I still wish that I’d had the option to get the degree. I’ve given up on pursuing a Ph.D., but I still get to do work similar to that of Ph.D. physicists. When I applied to join LISA, they accepted me because of my research in general relativity. And they treat me just like anybody else. That is the most inclusive thing allies can do.

Today, Farmer started teaching at Elmhurst University in Illinois, in a small supportive community. “It’s sort of counterintuitive, but I’m confident that a conservative school will stand behind me because they hired me for my credentials. Be open to finding acceptance anywhere.”

Similarly, many LGBT+academics shared about the effects on their careers of fighting prejudice, assumptions and bias; how colleagues can be effective allies and advocates; and what policies institutions could have to make STEM workplaces more inclusive.

The will to work for society will boost your soul and help you gain some valuable skills that you’ll need in the future working world such as time management, resilience, and adaptability.

Plus, if you discover yourself committed to the cause and want to pursue a career in that precise field, you’ve already got a foot in the door.

Through volunteering, you may find other like-minded people in a similar profession who will recognize your passion. They may surprise you by offering a job to you or at least point you in the right direction.

Try freelancing

Now freelancing is a popular term among millennials, and now Gen Z-ers are also jumping into the pool. It is the right time to try your hand at freelancing if you’re looking for money while studying.

If you’re unable to find a full-time job, freelancing is a great way to gain early industry experience, learn about the working environment, and make worthy contacts in your industry.

Robyn D Shulman, a creator on Forbes advises that graduates must post their own freelance jobs in online job boards such as Fivver, Upwork, and Linkedin Profinder – websites where freelancers can bid on projects.

Being busy in freelance work will help you keep your skills sharp, and gives you added experience to put in your CV.

Surf different channels to find a job

Okay! You’ve tried every possible way to find a job on Indeed or Glassdoor and still, your inbox is away from job letters. Maybe it’s time to try a different tack.

College graduates today have a pool of options when it comes to hitting a perfect job. Open Facebook and search for job-related groups or niche websites that are frequent in posting jobs of various fields.

Everyone has certain companies that they would love to work for, and I’m sure you have yours too. Consider contacting them directly from the website or email to find out the potential vacancy they might want.

Going through different mediums will keep you accelerated and save you from feeling demotivated when you’ve exhausted all the relevant job applications on just one or two websites.

A lot of existing workforce is approaching retirement age, and companies are struggling with how they are going to secure the next generation of workers. Ohio, the state of Midwestern United Nations is one of the many regions facing the same scenario. A new program aims to make paid internships available to Dayton-area high school students for the next three years. Through this, some local companies will connect to another pipeline of potential employees.

Southwestern Ohio Council is proud to launch the Miami Valley Intern Academy this year for Higher Education, which has four years offered college internships. A handful of companies have shown interest, and SOCHE is looking for more firms to participate.

Engineering & Science Foundation of Dayton has decided to pay 50% of the three-year cost, which is equivalent to $90,000 to employ each intern. The rest amount will be covered by the each participated company.

The internship program offers the same benefit, giving students first-hand experience of what certain career paths are like in a real day-to-day job. About 100 students are expected to get an opportunity over the three years. Some of them working limited hours during the school year and others working longer hours in summer positions.

A win-win for students and employers

“We’re looking at more in-demand industries, in particular engineering, computer technology, advanced manufacturing, health care, accounting, marketing, and other business-related fields,” said SOCHE vice president of development Patty Buddelmeyer.

For last five years, state and local school officials have tried to get high school and even middle school students thinking in more depth about possible career pathways.

Fairmont High School’s career tech center adopted the motto, “Find out what you want to do and be, for free.” They emphasize that students can effort for elective and career-focused classes early, whether in health care, business or technology pathways, potentially avoiding the expensive problem of starting on one college track, then having to switch.

The group’s website said students’ advisors or counselors will be asked to fill out an employability form for them, evaluating skills ranging from communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills, to attitude and willingness to learn, to responsibility and resilience.

“The company will be able to have an intern complete entry-level tasks that take away from management’s precious time (and at half the cost). And it will offer companies another alternative in establishing relationships with future workers,” said Patty Buddelmeyer.
